The overall height of this compact awning cassette is only 130mm, making it one of the smallest awning cassettes available and yet it is still a super high quality awning with over 150 fabrics to choose from for the canopy cover. The cassette and arms are available in a choice of 7 different finished colours as standard, but with the option for a special colour if required for your project. (contact us for pricing) Adjustable canopy pitch is also standard, so you can set the right pitch once fitted.
This is one of the best selling Markilux awnings for small to medium applications and is an 'end fix' awning, meaning the fixing brackets are always at either end of the cassette for easy reference and installation calculations.

Markilux 990 Full Cassette Awning

The Markilux 990 is a compact, sleek full cassette awning designed for installations where space is tight but you still want a premium look and long term protection for the fabric and arms. When retracted, the cover, roller and mechanisms sit fully enclosed within the cassette, helping keep the awning cleaner and more sheltered from the weather between uses.

With a neat oval cassette shape and an overall height of just under 130mm, the 990 is an excellent choice for properties with limited mounting height, shallow soffits, or locations where a larger cassette would look too bulky. It is a particularly popular domestic model for shading patios, terraces and outdoor seating areas without overpowering the facade.

Why choose the 990

  • True full cassette protection: When closed, the awning is fully enclosed to protect the fabric and moving parts.
  • Compact cassette size: Ideal when you have restricted installation space, with an overall cassette size of 217mm x 124mm.
  • Flexible mounting options: Supplied with face fix wall brackets as standard, with optional fixings available for ceiling mounting under an overhang and for roof beam mounting.
  • Wide pitch adjustment: Wall mounted pitch adjustment is typically 5 to 35 degrees, while ceiling mounted installations can be adjusted up to 70 degrees (site conditions and bracket selection will influence the usable range).
  • Neat water management design: Features an integrated gutter system with concealed drainage spouts to reduce water build up on the cassette.

Premium Fabric Collections

The Markilux 990 is available with the latest "Collection One" fabric ranges, offering over 200 patterns designed for longevity and brilliance. The advanced textile technology ensures the fabric remains vibrant and functional for years.

  • Visutex: Exclusive to Markilux, these fabrics feature a textured structure with high-quality yarn that creates a vibrant, 3D-like effect and exceptional colour brilliance.
  • Sunsilk: A high-tech polyester fabric with "snc" (self-cleaning effect) coating. It is extremely tear-resistant, dirt-repellent, and offers high UV protection (UPF 50+).
  • Sunvas: A soft-touch fabric with a canvas-like texture, combining a traditional textile feel with modern durability and fade resistance.
  • Smart Art: For a truly unique look, the Smart Art range offers printed motifs that turn the awning into a visual statement piece, utilising latex printing technology for weather-resistant art.

Operation and controls

Manual operation is supplied as standard using a winding handle, which is a reliable option for smaller sizes or occasional use. For day to day convenience, electric operation is the most popular upgrade and is especially recommended for larger widths and projections.

  • Hard wired motor: Operated via a wall mounted switch, ideal where you want a straightforward control method.
  • Wireless motor: Enables remote handset control.
  • Somfy io option: Supports two way communication and smart control when paired with compatible systems such as the Somfy TaHoma Switch, allowing timers and automated scenarios.

Sizes and limits

The Markilux 990 is available up to a maximum width of 5000mm and a maximum projection of 3000mm, making it well suited to most residential patios and garden seating areas.

Maximum width 5000mm
Maximum projection 3000mm
Overall cassette size 217mm x 124mm (overall height just under 130mm)
Wall mounted pitch adjustment Typically 5 to 35 degrees
Arm Technology Twin steel-link chains (standard) or Bionic Tendon (optional)

Weather use guidance

The Markilux 990 is primarily a sun shading awning. Like any unsupported retractable awning, it can be used in light rain if set to a suitable pitch so water runs off the fabric efficiently (a minimum of 14 degrees is typically recommended for rain run off).

For wind, the published wind resistance class is usually Class 2 (corresponding to Beaufort 5, approx 28-37 km/h), though this depends on the fixings and size. As with all awnings, heavy rain, gusty conditions and leaving the awning open unattended are the users responsibility, and sensible operation is essential to protect the product and the building it is fixed to.

Installation suitability

Standard brackets are supplied for wall mounting (face fix). If your installation requires fixing under a soffit or overhang, ceiling brackets are available, and for certain structures roof beam mounting brackets can also be specified. Always ensure the fixing method and substrate are suitable for the loads involved, and consider professional installation if you are unsure.

Dimensions

Maximum Width 5000mm
Maximum Projection 3000mm
Cassette Dimensions 217mm depth x 124mm height (Oval profile)

Choose from over 200 designs in the Markilux collection, including:

  • Sunsilk: High-tech polyester with self-cleaning effect (snc) and high UV protection.
  • Sunvas: Soft-touch fabric with a textile character and modern durability.
  • Visutex: Designer fabrics with textured weaving for a vibrant 3D effect.
  • Perla FR: Fire-retardant option for commercial compliance.
  • Smart Art: Printed motifs for unique visual statements.

Optional Valance: A front sun valance is available (surcharge applies) in straight, curved, wavy, or corrugated designs.

Operation

  • Manual (Standard): Stainless steel winding handle hooks into an eyelet at the side of the awning.
  • Electric (Optional):
    • Hard-wired motor (wall switch).
    • Radio-controlled motor (handset).
    • Somfy io technology (smart home integration).
  • Note: You can specify which side (left or right, viewed from outside) the operation point is located.

Safety Technology

Markilux Vibrabox: An optional wireless wind sensor that fixes to the front profile. It detects vibration and movement in the awning itself—often more reliable than a standard anemometer—and retracts the system automatically to prevent damage. Battery-powered with adjustable sensitivity levels.

Installation instructions are available on request and detailed PDF guides are included with your product delivery.

Handling and Lifting

The Markilux 990 is a high-quality, substantial unit. Safe installation requires a minimum of two people to lift the cassette onto the wall brackets. Do not attempt to lift or position the awning alone.

Fixing and Structure

This model is designed for straightforward installation, utilising just two end-fix brackets (face fix as standard). However, the simplicity of the bracket system makes the quality of the wall fixing critical. Standard brackets supplied are for a standard wall fixing installation. Many others brackets are available for alternative fixing positions.

  • Structural Integrity: The wall must be capable of withstanding the significant leverage forces generated when the awning is extended, especially in breezy conditions.
  • Fixings: You must select anchors appropriate for your specific wall type (e.g., solid brick, concrete, stone). Standard masonry bolts may not be suitable for all substrates.
  • Single Storey Extensions: Never fit a retractable awning to the top courses of a single-storey structure without additional reinforcement. We strongly recommend using spreader brackets or plates to distribute the load down to the lower, compressive parts of the wall. Please contact us if you are unsure; we can supply various spreader plates to suit different needs.

Professional Installation Recommended

While DIY installation is possible for competent individuals, we advise engaging a professional installer if you lack experience with structural fixings or heavy lifting. Ensuring a safe and secure fit is the user's responsibility.

Installation Services

We do not currently offer a nationwide installation service, though we are exploring this for the future.

  • Local Service: If you are located within 40 miles of Northamptonshire, we can provide a quote from trusted, long-standing professional installers.
  • Self-Install Support: For DIY projects or customers using their own tradespeople, we provide handy information PDFs to assist with the process.

Safety Note: If you have any doubts regarding the suitability of your wall or the installation process, please contact us or consult a structural engineer before proceeding.

Markilux awnings are engineered in Germany for long term performance and reliability. We are confident in the quality of these systems and support them with a comprehensive manufacturer-backed warranty structure.

Warranty Overview

Markilux offer up to a 5-year manufacturer's warranty on key components such as frames, arms, fabrics and motors when the awning is installed and used in accordance with their guidelines. The exact warranty term applicable to your order will be confirmed in your quotation and order documentation, as this can vary depending on model, options and installation arrangements.

What is Typically Covered?

Subject to the terms above, Markilux warranty provisions generally cover:

  • Framework: Cassette profiles, front profiles and supporting hardware against manufacturing defects.
  • Moving Parts: Folding arms, joints and power-transmission elements such as chain links or Bionic Tendon components.
  • Motors and Controls: Electric drives and associated control units where supplied as part of the awning system.
  • Fabrics: Protection against rot, mildew and abnormal loss of function within the stated warranty period, under normal residential use.

Fabric Characteristics

Awning fabrics are technical textiles and may display inherent characteristics which are not considered defects and do not affect service life, such as:

  • Creasing and wrinkling: Occurring from sewing, folding and rolling on the tube, sometimes appearing darker in transmitted light.
  • Rippling or “waffling”: Particularly near seams or hems, caused by multiple fabric layers rolling up at different thicknesses.
  • Slight stretching: Due to the constant tension required to keep the cover taut.

Warranty Conditions

To keep your warranty valid, the following key conditions apply:

  • Correct installation: The awning must be fitted in accordance with the official Markilux installation instructions, using suitable fixings and a structurally sound substrate.
  • Proper operation: The product must not be left open in unsuitable weather such as high winds, heavy rain, snow or storms, and should always be retracted when unattended.
  • Electrical work: Any hard-wired electrical connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with current regulations.
  • Maintenance: Routine checks, basic cleaning and prompt rectification of obvious issues are expected as part of normal care.

Making a Claim

In the unlikely event of a problem, please contact us with your order number, photos and a description of the issue. We will liaise with Markilux or our UK supplier to confirm the warranty status for your specific installation and arrange the appropriate remedy, which may include replacement parts, repair or technical guidance.

Full terms and conditions of the manufacturer’s warranty are available on request and will be detailed in your quotation or order documentation.

Measuring for a Markilux Folding Arm Awning

Markilux folding arm awnings are heavier and more robust than many budget brands, and they can generate significant forces on the structure they are fixed to. Accurate measuring is essential not only for a good visual fit and shading performance, but also to ensure there is a safe, suitable fixing position for the brackets and fixings.

Key Dimensions to Consider

When measuring for any folding arm awning you should determine:

  • Ordering Width: The overall width of the cassette (or mechanism on open/semicassette models). The fabric cover is always narrower than this dimension due to the side mechanisms and tolerances.
  • Projection: The distance from the back of the wall brackets to the front of the leading profile when the arms are fully extended. Projections are usually in 500mm increments, while width is made to the millimetre.
  • Mounting Height: The height from finished ground level to the fixing line of the awning brackets/cassette.
  • Front Profile (Headroom): The lowest height of the front profile when the awning is fully extended. We generally recommend at least 2000mm clear headroom.
  • Pitch (Angle): The slope of the fabric when extended. This affects both headroom and rainwater run off.

Pitch, Headroom and Rain Use

As a guide, Markilux recommend planning with approximately 2000mm headroom at the front and an inclination around 14–15 degrees for extended awnings to allow water to run off effectively in light rain.

  • Minimum pitch for rain: For water to drain off rather than pool, set at a minimum of 14 degrees wherever possible.
  • Zero pitch installations: Some awnings can be set to little or no pitch, but in this configuration they are for sun shade only and must not be used in the rain.
  • Effect on projection: When pitched, the horizontal shaded depth is slightly less than the nominal projection because of the angle; bear this in mind if you need to cover a specific area.

Examples of Typical Sizing

A common domestic size is around 4000mm wide with a 3000mm projection. On a typical two-storey house:

  • The mounting height might be approximately 2700–2800mm from ground.
  • With a pitch of 14–15 degrees, the front profile would usually sit around 2000mm from the ground when fully extended.

Bracket Positions and Structural Awareness

Every Markilux model has specific bracket positions and minimum bracket quantities. On many models, the brackets sit close to where the arms meet the cassette, and in some cases there are fixed positions that cannot be changed.

  • Check the technical sheet: Always refer to the specific Markilux model’s bracket drawing before finalising your measurements.
  • Non standard substrates: If the ideal bracket positions fall over a weak area (for example a lintel, single-skin brickwork, cladding, or insulated render), you may need spreader plates or alternative fixing solutions.
  • Extra brackets: For heavier awnings or exposed locations it is often advisable to use additional brackets or spreader plates to help distribute the loads.

Measuring When the Wall is Not Straightforward

Many properties have obstacles or less than ideal fixing areas. When measuring, do not just look at the available empty wall space – think about what is behind it and around it.

  • Downpipes and services: You can often span across pipes or small projections by using stand off brackets or spacer plates, allowing the awning to sit proud of obstacles.
  • Uneven or stepped brickwork: Spreader plates and packing plates can be used to bridge over uneven surfaces and ensure the brackets sit in the same plane.
  • Single storey extensions: Awnings should not be fixed only into the top few courses of brickwork on a single storey structure. Use spreader brackets/plates that transfer load down to stronger masonry below.
  • Timber frames and cladding: The fixing must go back into the structural frame or a correctly sized structural beam, not simply into thin cladding or fascia boards.

Size, Shade and Orientation

Very few customers regret ordering an awning that is “too large”, but many wish they had maximised the width or projection once they see how the sun moves across their patio.

  • Allow for overhang: To properly cover tables, chairs and walkways, allow some overhang beyond the edges of the main area you are shading.
  • Test the shadow: Use a pole or long piece of timber at the proposed projection, held at the likely mounting height, to see where the shadow falls at different times of day.
  • Orientation: West facing gardens in particular benefit from larger projections and optional drop down valances to deal with low evening sun.

Drop Valances and Extras

Many Markilux models can be specified with manual or electric drop down front valances (Shadeplus) which provide extra shade and privacy when the sun is low.

  • Drop valances typically extend up to around 2100mm, giving coverage from the front profile down towards ground level.
  • These are especially useful on west or south-west facing terraces and on more exposed sites where you also want some wind screening.
