No. Definitely never leave a retractable awning open unattended. Whilst you can have motion or wind speed sensors in any high quality electric awning this isn’t a reason not to manage the awning properly. With multiple sensors and the right pitch angle for the canopy you can arguably leave a retractable awning to manage itself, with a sun sensor to open the awning and then either a rain or wind sensor to close it when necessary but generally it isn’t advised as a permanent situation all year round.
If you require a product to be permanently covering an outside area then maybe consider a polycarbonate or glass veranda as a solid all year round covering.
Remote control options are more varied than just a simple hand held remote transmitter, but this is still one of the most popular initial controls used for an electric awning. One button to send the awning open and one to close with a middle button for stopping the awning at any point and also setting up a preset position if required. Multi channel transmitters are available for multiple awnings and other functions
A good idea for many users is a remote handset, but also a battery operated wireless wall switch to sit in a permanent position inside your home as a constant reference point for control.
It is effectively a remote control built into the shape and size of a wall switch like you would normally use for lights in your home. These can be single or multi channel for more than one awning and also to control any LED lighting.
More people are opting for smart app control, so with the addition of a Somfy hub plugged into your home router you have access to a free smartphone app to control one or multiple products from your phone. The Somfy smart app also allows you to create ‘scenarios’ such as opening your awning at a certain time of day on certain day or months of the year. Connection to other optional sensors, such as rain sensors or sun sensors also enhance the awning use for your home.
All electric awnings using the world leading Somfy motors on Awnings Online are specified as an IO protocol meaning they have 2 way communication and are perfect for smart control upgrades.
The Somfy 3D motion sensor is a small rectangular plastic box which contains a battery and adjustable motion sensor with a transmitter. The purpose is to sense excessive movement in the front of a retractable awning when it is windy and then send a signal to retract and close for safety and protection of the awning.
It is recommended for almost every electric folding arm awning as a great safety device in case you ever leave the awning extended and it gets windy. Also an essential item if you are using a smart set up with your awning to extend automatically in sun or hot temperatures. The motion sensor (or alternative wind speed sensor) will always override other controls and sensors on any electric awning.
The device is fitted to the inside of the front profile, although not every awning model or size can accommodate this device depending on the size and space left when closed.
