SkyShade 12000 OCH Retractable Commercial Awning

The SkyShade 12000 OCH is our heavy-duty open cassette awning, specifically engineered for commercial premises and large-scale residential applications. Based on the robust 'Arezzo' platform, this system is designed to prioritise strength, stability, and installation flexibility, making it the ideal solution for shopfronts, restaurants, and patios with challenging fixing surfaces.

This model features a protective aluminium hood cover which sits above the fabric roll. This smart addition shields the fabric from rain, dirt, and UV degradation when the awning is retracted, offering many benefits of a full cassette system but with the superior strength of a torque bar construction.

Commercial Grade Strength: The Torque Bar Advantage

Unlike standard domestic awnings which rely on the cassette casing for structure, the 12000 OCH is built around a 40mm square steel torque bar (zinc-plated and powder-coated). This creates an immensely rigid spine for the awning, allowing it to span massive widths of up to 12 metres without flexing.

The "Problem Solver" for Installation:
The torque bar design allows for a multi-bracket, variable positioning system. Instead of being forced to fix brackets at the far ends (where brickwork might be weak), you can slide the brackets along the bar to align perfectly with the strongest parts of your wall—such as structural pillars, studs, or steelwork. This makes the 12000 OCH the "go-to" awning for older buildings or uneven facades.

Massive Coverage & Compact Design

Despite its heavy-duty classification, the system remains visually compact. When closed, the awning (including the hood) sits neatly against the wall with dimensions of just 290mm projection and 283mm height.

  • Maximum Width: 12,000mm (12m). (Supplied as a coupled unit for widths over 7m).
  • Maximum Projection: 4,100mm (4.1m).
  • Extended Living: The deep 4.1m projection makes it perfect for covering large dining tables or rows of café seating.

Somfy Motorisation & Safety

For an awning of this size, manual operation is possible but electric operation is strongly recommended. We fit industry-leading Somfy IO motors as standard, ensuring smooth and effortless control.

Commercial Safety: For business owners, we highly advise adding a Somfy Wind Sensor. This protects your investment (and your customers) by automatically retracting the awning if wind speeds become dangerous, giving you peace of mind during changeable weather.

Premium Branding & Fabrics

The SkyShade 12000 OCH is finished with high-performance Dickson acrylic fabric, available in a vast range of colours to suit your branding or home decor. For commercial clients, the open style of the awning makes it easier to apply signwriting or logos to the main cover or valance (available on request).

The Torque Bar Advantage: Unrivalled Strength & Stability

Understanding why the SkyShade 12000 OCH is superior for commercial use requires understanding the Torque Bar concept. While standard domestic awnings often rely on the outer casing for structure (fixing only at the far ends), this system is built around a heavy-duty 40mm square steel backbone that runs the entire width of the awning.

How it works:
The heavy folding arms of an awning exert massive leverage forces—effectively trying to twist the awning off the wall. On a Torque Bar system, the arms are clamped directly onto this steel bar, rather than the cosmetic casing. The wall brackets also clamp onto this same bar.

Why this is stronger:

  • Direct Load Transfer: Because the arm supports and the wall brackets are both attached to the same rigid steel bar, the mechanical stress is transferred directly into the fixings, bypassing the aluminium bodywork entirely.
  • Multiple Fixing Points: The biggest advantage is Load Spreading. With an end-fixed awning, all the weight and stress are concentrated at two points on your wall. With this Torque Bar system, we can install 4, 5, or even 6 brackets spread evenly across the width. This dramatically reduces the strain on any single brick or anchor point.
  • Installation Flexibility: The brackets can slide along the bar to any position. If your wall has a weak spot, a downpipe, or uneven brickwork, the installer simply moves the bracket to a solid fixing point nearby. This guarantees a safe, secure install on surfaces where standard awnings would fail.

System Construction & Torque Bar Technology

  • System Type: Heavy-duty Open Cassette system with integrated Aluminium Hood Cover.
  • Torque Bar Core: Built on a 40mm square steel torque bar (zinc-plated and powder-coated).
Key Advantage: This load-bearing spine allows for Variable Bracket Positioning. Unlike end-fixed awnings, installation brackets can be moved along the bar to align with the strongest fixing points on your facade (e.g., mortar lines, pillars, or steelwork), ensuring a secure install on difficult surfaces.
  • Hood Protection: Extruded aluminium 'OCH' hood provides top-cover protection for the fabric roll against rain and UV rays when retracted.
  • Coupling:
    • Up to 7000mm wide: Supplied as a single unit.
    • Over 7000mm wide: Supplied as two units which are 'coupled' (joined) together on-site.

Operation & Motorisation

  • Operation Modes:
    • Manual: Gearbox operation via steel winding handle.
    • Electric (Recommended): Powered by Somfy IO radio motors and controls.
  • Handing: Left or Right-hand operation is determined by viewing the awning from the outside (looking towards the facade).
  • Power Cable: Electric models include a 3m black power cable, exiting on the same side as the chosen motor position.
  • Pitch: Fully adjustable pitch angle to suit sun direction and headroom requirements.

Aesthetics & Finishes

  • Hardware Colours:
    • Standard: White (RAL 9010), Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016), Black (RAL 9005).

Delivery & Assembly Configuration

The SkyShade 12000 OCH is engineered for large-scale coverage, and its supply configuration depends on the total width ordered:

  • Widths up to 7000mm (7m): Supplied as a single, fully factory-assembled unit, ready to lift onto the brackets.
  • Widths over 7000mm: Supplied as a Coupled System. This consists of two separate awning modules that must be joined together on-site. For coupled units, the fabric cover is supplied separately to be fitted during assembly.

Full, detailed assembly instructions are provided with every order to guide you through the coupling process.

Torque Bar Installation: Maximum Flexibility

As a Torque Bar system, the SkyShade 12000 OCH offers superior installation versatility compared to standard end-fix awnings:

  • Variable Positioning: The wall brackets clamp onto the square steel bar rather than the awning casing. This allows you to slide the brackets horizontally to align them with sound fixing points (e.g., solid brickwork, studs, or steel beams) rather than being forced to fix at the extreme ends.
  • Spreading the Load: For older walls or uncertain substrates, you can easily add extra brackets (available as an option) to spread the weight over a wider area.
  • Wide Brackets: We also offer extra-wide wall spreader brackets for installations where additional surface area contact is required.

Fixing Recommendations

  • Chemical Fixings: For the most secure bond, we strongly recommend using chemical resin fixings (chem-fix) rather than expanding mechanical bolts. This ensures a stress-free, high-strength bond to the substrate, which is essential for heavy commercial awnings.
  • Manpower: Due to the weight and size of commercial-grade systems, a minimum of 2 people are required for installation. For awnings exceeding 6m in width, additional lifting help is recommended.

Commissioning

Once the brackets are secure, the awning body is lifted and locked into place. Final commissioning involves:

  1. Pitch Adjustment: Setting the angle of the arms and canopy to suit your shading needs.
  2. Motor Setup: If electric, setting the motor limits (stop points) using the Somfy controls.

Fabric Characteristics

The fabrics in our standard range are woven from solution-dyed acrylic. While every care is taken, minor imperfections may be visible after installation. These are inherent characteristics of acrylic fabrics and do not affect the performance or lifespan of the cover. Your installer cannot be held responsible for these natural occurrences.

  • Veining: Subsequent to handling during sewing and assembly, acrylic fabrics treated with fluoride resins may present "veining" (white lines), which are visible against sunlight due to optical refraction.
  • Folds/Wrinkles: When rolling the cover, folds may be produced in the centre or along the stitching lines.
  • Waving/Waffling: Due to the double thickness of fabric at the seams and hems, the roll diameter is slightly larger in these areas. This tension can create a wave or herringbone pattern in the fabric, which is normal.

How to Measure for the SkyShade 12000 OCH

Measuring for the SkyShade 12000 OCH is straightforward, but it is important to understand that the size you order is the Overall Width of the framework, including the hood and end caps.

1. Ordering Width (Total System Width)

The width you select is the total physical width of the aluminium hardware.
Note on Fabric Coverage: The actual fabric cover will be approximately 200mm narrower than the total awning width (100mm gap each side) to accommodate the winding mechanism and arms.

2. The Torque Bar Advantage: Flexible Measuring

Unlike standard "end-fix" awnings, where you must ensure you have solid brickwork at the exact outer edges of your measurement, the 12000 OCH uses a Torque Bar system. This significantly reduces installation headaches:

  • Bracket Freedom: Because the brackets clamp onto the torque bar, they can be positioned anywhere along the width of the awning (within reason).
  • Avoiding Obstructions: If your desired width means a bracket would land on a downpipe, a vent, or a weak mortar joint, you don't need to change the size of the awning. You simply move the bracket along the bar to the nearest solid fixing point.
  • Extra Security: If you are unsure about the wall strength, you can order extra brackets and space them out to spread the load more evenly across the façade.

3. Ordering Projection

The projection is the distance the awning extends out from the wall when fully open.
Please note: The projection is measured from the back of the wall bracket to the front edge of the lead rail. It is not the length of the fabric itself.

4. Mounting Height & Headroom

You need to ensure there is sufficient headroom for the awning to operate.

  • Cassette Height: The unit is 283mm high. Ensure you have clear wall space above any doors or windows.
  • Pitch Allowance: Retractable awnings are usually installed with a pitch (angle) to allow rain runoff. We recommend fitting the awning at least 2.8m to 3m from the ground to ensure that when it is fully extended and angled down, you still have comfortable headroom (approx. 2.1m) at the front edge.

Why is the Torque Bar system on the SkyShade 12000 OCH better for large installations?

Standard awnings typically rely on brackets fixed at the extreme ends of the casing, which places immense stress on just two points of your wall. The SkyShade 12000 OCH is different; it is built around a heavy-duty 40mm square steel torque bar that acts as a "backbone" across the entire width of the awning.

This design offers two major commercial advantages:
1. Superior Rigidity: Because the arms clamp directly to this steel bar, the awning is incredibly stable even when fully extended to 4.1m.
2. Installation Flexibility: The wall brackets also clamp to this bar and can be slid to any position along its length. This allows installers to fit more brackets to spread the load evenly and align them with the strongest parts of your building (like structural pillars or steelwork) rather than being forced to fix into potentially weak brickwork at the corners.

Is the SkyShade 12000 OCH weather-resistant even though it is an 'open' cassette system?

Yes, specifically because of the 'OCH' (Open Cassette Hood) design. While it doesn't have a fully enclosing bottom shell like a full cassette, this model features a specially extruded aluminium hood cover that sits directly above the fabric roll.

When the awning is retracted, this hood acts as a roof, shielding the fabric from rain, dirt, and UV rays. This smart design prevents the water pooling and sun bleaching that can damage unprotected fabrics, offering a perfect balance of protection and value without the bulk or cost of a fully enclosed casing.

Can I specify fire-retardant fabrics for my restaurant or pub terrace?

Absolutely. While our standard Dickson Solar fabrics are excellent for domestic use, we understand that commercial premises often have strict safety codes. We can upgrade your SkyShade 12000 OCH with Dickson Spark FR fabric.

This specialist range is flame-retardant and certified to major European fire safety standards (including M1 and B1 ratings), ensuring you meet your insurance and licensing requirements while still benefiting from a stylish, high-performance solar shading solution.
