Specification & Technical Details

The Awnings Online Aria is engineered for large-scale outdoor coverage, combining exceptional build quality with versatile installation options. Below you will find the detailed specifications regarding dimensions, mounting, fabric performance, and motorisation for this premium full-cassette awning.

Installation & Mounting Options

The Aria utilises a robust End-Fix design with brackets located at the two outer extremities of the cassette. Due to its substantial dimensions, specific structural considerations apply.

  • Standard Face Fixing: Supplied with heavy-duty end brackets for direct fixing to flat vertical walls (brickwork, concrete blockwork, or masonry). This provides a clean, streamlined appearance with the cassette sitting close to the wall.
  • Centre Support Requirement: Any installation exceeding 4750mm in width requires a centre support bracket. This tri-bracket configuration ensures optimal load distribution, prevents cassette flexing, and maintains structural integrity across wide spans.

Specialist Fitting Options
We can supply a range of specialist brackets for complex installation scenarios where standard face-fixing is not possible:

  • Single-Storey Extensions: Heavy-duty spreader plates and reinforced gutter brackets for limited wall heights above patio doors.
  • Soffit & Eaves Mounting: Brackets to hang the awning from overhead structures.
  • Pipework & Obstructions: Extended standoff brackets (100mm-300mm projection) to clear downpipes or lights while maintaining secure fixing.
  • Ceiling & Canopy Fixing: Specialized brackets for mounting to substantial timber structures or conservatory bars (structural verification required).

Note: For installations on non-solid walls or where substrate strength is in doubt, we strongly recommend a professional structural assessment.

Made-to-Measure Dimensions

Every Aria awning is manufactured to your exact specifications in our UK facility.

Installation Guide

The Awnings Online Aria is designed for installation efficiency, but its larger dimensions and potential requirement for a centre support bracket make proper planning and execution critical. Its end-fix bracket system (with centre bracket where required) makes it accessible for confident DIY installers or professional fitters with experience handling large-format awnings.

This guide provides an overview of the installation process and key considerations specific to the Aria.

Is This Awning Suitable for DIY Installation?

The Aria's end-fix bracket design offers clear fixing points, but the awning's substantial size and weight require additional consideration compared to smaller models.

Key Advantages for Installation:

  • Pre-assembled unit: Arrives ready to hang with minimal on-site assembly.
  • Clear fixing points: Specific locations at two (or three) points eliminate guesswork.
  • Standard fixings: Included for typical solid masonry walls.

Additional Considerations for the Aria:

  • Weight: The Aria is significantly heavier than compact awnings. A second assistant is essential, and a third person is recommended for installations over 5.5m wide.
  • Centre Bracket: Awnings over 4750mm (4.75m) wide require a centre support bracket to prevent cassette sagging.
  • Wall Loading: Larger projections create greater leverage forces on the wall. Structural suitability is critical.
  • Height: Scaffolding towers are recommended over ladders for safety when handling this size of awning.

When to Use a Professional Installer:

  • Awnings over 5.5m wide (due to weight and handling complexity).
  • Installation at significant height (above first-floor level).
  • Fixing to non-standard materials (timber frame, steel frame, cavity walls).
  • Properties with structural concerns or listed building status.

Tools & Equipment Required

Before starting, ensure you have the following tools and equipment:

Essential Tools:

  • Electric drill (hammer action for masonry) with appropriate drill bits.
  • Socket set and spanners (adjustable or fixed).
  • 6mm Allen key (hex key) – for pitch adjustment.
  • Spirit level (minimum 1200mm, ideally 1800mm or laser level for large spans).
  • Pencil/marker and tape measure (minimum 8m).

Additional Equipment:

  • Sturdy scaffolding tower or mobile platform (strongly recommended).
  • Voltmeter or test lamp (for checking electrical supply).
  • Minimum two assistants (three recommended for wide awnings).

Safety Equipment:

  • Safety glasses and dust mask (for drilling).
  • Work gloves and hard hats.

Pre-Installation Checklist

Before beginning, carefully assess your property and ensure all conditions are suitable:

  1. Structural Suitability: The wall must be sound, free from cracks, and capable of supporting significant loads. Standard fixings are for solid brick or concrete. Cavity walls or timber frames require specialist assessment.
  2. Clear Mounting Area: Ensure sufficient flat wall space with no obstructions (pipes, lights, vents).
  3. Height Requirements: Minimum mounting height of 2.5m (ideally 2.8m–3.0m) to allow for the Aria's deep projection.
  4. Centre Bracket Assessment: For awnings over 4750mm, verify you have a solid fixing point at the exact centre of the mounting run.
  5. Electrical Supply: A qualified electrician should install a fused spur or socket (protected by RCD) within reach of the motor cable.

Installation Overview - Wall Mounted (Face Fix)

The standard installation method is face-fixing directly onto a vertical wall surface.

Step 1: Position the First End Bracket

  • Measure and mark the position, ensuring sufficient clearance.
  • Use a spirit level or laser level to ensure the bracket is perfectly horizontal.
  • Drill and secure firmly using appropriate fixings (typically M10/M12 bolts).

Step 2: Mark the Second End Bracket

  • Measure the exact centre-to-centre dimension provided with your awning.
  • Mark the position, ensuring it is perfectly level with the first bracket. A laser level is highly recommended for wide spans.
  • Drill and secure the second bracket.
  • Critical: Even a 1–2mm height difference on wide awnings can cause fabric sag.

Step 3: Install the Centre Bracket (If Required)

  • For awnings over 4750mm, mark the exact midpoint between the end brackets.
  • Ensure the centre bracket is perfectly level with the end brackets.
  • Drill and secure firmly.
  • Note: Without this bracket, wide cassettes will sag, causing fabric issues and mechanism damage.

Step 4: Hang the Awning

  • Requires 2–3 people. Carefully lift the cassette to mounting height.
  • Hook the cassette onto the end wall brackets first.
  • If using a centre bracket, lower the cassette onto it simultaneously.
  • Once seated, tighten the locking screws/bolts on all brackets to secure the awning.
  • Safety: Do not stand beneath the awning until fully secured.

Step 5: Adjust the Inclination (Pitch)

  • Open the awning fully.
  • Loosen the locking bolts on the arm supports (typically 6mm Allen key).
  • Turn the adjustment bolt to raise/lower the front bar.
  • Aim for a pitch of 10–15° (steeper for 3.5m projections) to ensure water drainage.
  • Ensure both sides are adjusted equally so the front bar is level.
  • Retighten all locking bolts.

Step 6: Final Steps

  • Fit the olive-shaped end caps (design 195) to the cassette ends.
  • Connect the motor power supply (qualified electrician required).
  • Test operation with the remote control and programme any sensors.

Alternative Mounting Options

While face-fixing is standard, the Aria is compatible with specialist brackets for challenging installations:

  • Ceiling Mounting: Using specific plates bolted into solid timber joists or concrete ceilings (Centre support required for wide units).
  • Soffit & Gutter Brackets: Heavy-duty brackets to hang from eaves/fascia (Structural adequacy of the soffit is critical).
  • Stand-Off Brackets: Spacers (100mm–300mm) to clear downpipes or obstructions while maintaining a secure fix to the substrate.

Please contact our technical team for non-standard bracket enquiries.

Special Considerations for Large Format Awnings

The Aria's size creates specific challenges requiring attention:

  • Wind Loading: Larger surface areas create huge forces. Ensure the wall is adequate and the awning is retracted in winds above Beaufort 5.
  • Fabric Tension: On wide units, perfect bracket levelling is critical to prevent twisting and uneven rolling.
  • Access: Plan how you will safely access the awning for future cleaning and maintenance.

After Installation - Care & Maintenance

  • Regular Checks: Inspect fixings and fabric tension periodically.
  • Cleaning: Clean fabric seasonally with a soft brush and mild soapy water.
  • Winter Storage: Keep retracted during winter. The full cassette protects the fabric.
  • Motor: The Somfy motor is a sealed, maintenance-free unit.

Key Installation Points Summary

  • End-Fix Design: With mandatory centre bracket for widths over 4750mm.
  • Heavy Lifting: Minimum two assistants required (three for 5.5m+ widths).
  • Levelling is Critical: Use a laser level for accurate bracket alignment across wide spans.
  • Structural Assessment: Verify your wall can support the significant loads of a large-format awning.
  • Safety First: Scaffolding towers are safer than ladders for installing the Aria.
  • Adjustable Pitch: Fine-tune the angle post-installation for optimal runoff.

Important: The Aria's larger dimensions make proper planning more critical than smaller awnings. If you have any doubts about structural suitability or your ability to handle the size/weight, we strongly recommend professional installation.

Measuring Guide - How to Measure for Your Aria Awning

Getting the correct measurements for your Awnings Online Aria is essential. As a premium, large-format awning manufactured to your exact specifications, accurate measuring ensures maximum shading coverage, structural safety, and a perfect fit.

The Aria is custom-built and cannot be returned if measured incorrectly. Please read this guide carefully, paying particular attention to the centre bracket requirements for awnings over 4.75m wide.

The Three Key Measurements

To order your Aria, you need three primary dimensions:

  1. Width: The total horizontal length of the cassette along the wall.
  2. Projection: The distance the awning extends outwards (2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, or 3.5m).
  3. Mounting Height: The vertical distance from the ground to the base of the cassette.

Step 1: Measuring the Width

The width determines your coverage area. The Aria is designed to span large openings like bi-fold doors.

How to Measure:

  1. Measure the Opening: Measure the total width of your door or window frame (including mullions).
  2. Add Overhang: We recommend adding 500–600mm to each side of the opening. This ensures better sun protection at angles and reduces internal glare.
    Example: 4500mm door + 500mm (left) + 500mm (right) = 5500mm Awning Width.
  3. Check Wall Space: Verify you have sufficient clear wall space for the total width, free from downpipes or obstructions.

Critical Width Considerations:

  • Maximum Width: 6.5m (with 3.0m projection) or 6.0m (with 3.5m projection).
  • Fabric Width: The fabric cover is approx. 170–220mm narrower than the total cassette width due to the mechanism.
  • Centre Bracket Threshold: Any awning over 4750mm (4.75m) requires a centre bracket.

Step 2: Centre Bracket Verification (Critical for Wide Awnings)

If your awning width exceeds 4750mm, a centre support bracket is MANDATORY.
This adds a third fixing point at the exact midpoint to prevent cassette sagging.

You MUST verify the following before ordering:

  • Solid Wall: Is there solid brick/blockwork at the exact centre point of your proposed width?
  • Obstructions: Are there any pipes, vents, lights, or windows at the centre point?
  • Access: Can you drill and fix securely at this location?

If you cannot install a bracket at the exact centre, you must reduce the awning width to 4750mm or less.

Step 3: Measuring the Projection

This is how far the awning extends away from the wall.

Available Projections:

  • 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.5m

Selecting the Right Depth:

  • Dining for 8–10 people: Minimum 3.0m recommended.
  • Large entertaining/Lounge areas: 3.5m recommended for maximum coverage.
  • Note: Due to the pitch angle (10–15°), the usable ground coverage is slightly less than the projection length.

Minimum Width Requirements:
Due to internal arm mechanics, larger projections require a minimum width to function:

Projection Minimum Width Required
2.0m 2460mm
2.5m 3030mm
3.0m 3600mm
3.5m 3840mm

Step 4: Measuring Mounting Height

The Aria requires sufficient height to allow for pitch (slope) and head clearance.

Recommendations:

  • Minimum Mounting Height: 2.6m (ideally 2.8m – 3.1m).
  • Head Clearance: Ensure at least 2.0m of clearance at the front bar when extended.
  • Obstructions: Check for clearance above opening windows or external shutters.

Calculating Front Height:

  • Formula: Mounting Height - (Projection × 0.26) ≈ Front Bar Height (at 15° pitch).
  • Example: 3.0m Mount - (3.5m × 0.26) = 2.09m Head Clearance.

Assessing Wall Suitability

The Aria is a heavy, large-format unit. Structural integrity is paramount.

Ideal Conditions:

  • Solid brick or blockwork (min 225mm thick).
  • Sound masonry with no cracks or bulging.
  • Flat, vertical surface.

Challenging Scenarios (Professional Advice Recommended):

  • Cavity Walls: May require specialist resin fixings or spreader plates.
  • Single Storey Extensions: May lack sufficient height or masonry above the lintel.
  • Bungalows: Often restricted by soffit height (consider soffit brackets).
  • Timber Frames: require locating stud work or structural headers.

Final Checklist Before Ordering

  • Width: Measured in mm (exact size required).
  • Projection: Selected (2.0m – 3.5m).
  • Centre Bracket: Checked if width > 4750mm. If yes, verified centre wall structure.
  • Height: Verified min 2.6m mounting height.
  • Obstructions: Checked for pipes/lights at all 3 bracket positions (Left, Centre, Right).
  • Structure: Confirmed wall condition is sound.

We strongly recommend professional installation for Aria awnings over 5.5m wide due to the weight and handling complexity.

Is the Aria suitable for a simple, end fix installation?

Yes. The Aria is designed around an end fix bracket principle, so the primary fixing points sit at each end of the cassette rather than being spread along the full length. This keeps measuring and bracket positioning straightforward on a typical domestic brick or block wall. On wider sizes, a centre support position may also be required, so always confirm you have solid fixing points where the brackets will land.

Will the Aria work over wide bi-fold or sliding doors?

Yes. The Aria is designed for larger domestic openings, making it well suited to modern bi-fold and sliding door elevations. When specifying width, allow a sensible amount of overhang beyond the door frame on both sides to improve shading when the sun is lower and to reduce glare into the room.

Can I use the Aria in windy or wet weather?

Like all folding arm patio awnings, the Aria is intended primarily for sun protection. It should be retracted in stronger winds, and it is not designed to be left out in prolonged or heavy rain where water loading can build on the fabric. If your patio is exposed, consider using a compatible wind sensor to help protect the awning by retracting it automatically.
