A very popular product with so many customers, not only because of the high quality and visual appeal but the actual performance too.
The fabric cover when extended and locked in place will withstand more wind than is comfortable to be outside in anyway, but is extensively used for the cooler months and the evenings for protection from cooling breezes when sitting outside, the enemy of outdoor living generally.  High quality, tough fabrics, as used for the awning covers combined with the high quality aluminium housing cassette, designed to fit onto a wall or structure with simple brackets. The cassette is easily removed when required with just a simple allen key. The handle for pulling the fabric cover out from the cassette is also the locking system for holding the extened fabric in place by the use of various bracket options. The final place for locking the fabric in place can be another wall, a post, a free standing post on a mobile or fixed base and also you could have more than one locking position if required. This is a flexible wind protection system.

Markilux 790 Retractable Side Screen

The Markilux 790 Side Screen is the perfect finishing touch for any patio or balcony, offering instant privacy and protection from low-lying sun and cooling breezes. Manufactured by German industry leaders Markilux, this slimline, pull-out awning is designed for effortless operation and simple DIY installation.

Whether used as a standalone privacy screen or as a complement to a folding arm awning, the Markilux 790 transforms your outdoor space into a cosy, sheltered haven. It acts as a stylish barrier against prying eyes from neighbours and blocks the glare of the setting sun, allowing you to relax in complete comfort.

Simple, Effective Design

The concept is beautifully simple: a compact, vertical cassette mounted to a wall protects the fabric when not in use. When you need shelter, simply pull the handle and extend the screen to your desired length (up to 4.5m), hooking it onto a docking post or wall bracket.

Inside the cassette, a robust spring-loaded roller keeps the premium fabric taut at all times, ensuring it doesn't sag or flap excessively in the wind. When you release the handle, the spring mechanism smoothly retracts the fabric back into its protective housing, keeping it clean and dust-free all year round.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Instant Privacy: Creates an immediate visual barrier, perfect for terraced properties or overlooked gardens.
  • Wind & Sun Protection: Blocks cool side breezes and low-angle sunlight that overhead awnings can't reach.

Installation Overview

The system consists of two main elements: the Cassette (which holds the fabric) and the Docking Point (where the handle hooks on).

  1. Fixing the Cassette: The vertical cassette is secured to your wall using two simple wall brackets.
    • Measure and mark the bracket positions vertically.
    • Drill and secure the brackets to the wall using suitable masonry fixings.
    • Lift the lightweight cassette onto the brackets and secure it in place with the locking screws (allen key provided).
  2. Fixing the Docking Point: Depending on your setup, you will install one of the following:
    • Wall Bracket: A small hook bracket screwed directly to an opposing wall or wooden fence post.
    • Docking Post: A vertical post bolted to your patio or decking floor. (Requires a solid surface like concrete or substantial timber decking).
  3. Operation: Once both ends are fixed, simply pull the handle to extend the screen and hook it onto your docking point.

Tools Required

  • Hammer Drill & Masonry Bits
  • Tape Measure & Pencil
  • Spirit Level (Vertical)
  • Screwdriver / Socket Set
  • Wall Plugs & Screws (appropriate for your specific wall type - brick, stone, or wood)

How to Measure for Your Side Screen

Measuring for a Markilux 790 Side Screen is straightforward. To ensure you select the correct options in our shop, please note that we define the dimensions as follows:

1. Width (Cassette Height)

In our online shop, the "Width" refers to the vertical height of the cassette housing.

  • 1730mm (approx 5ft 8in): Ideal for seated privacy; allows most people to stand and look over the top.
  • 2130mm (approx 7ft): The standard choice for full standing privacy and effective wind protection.
  • 2500mm (approx 8ft 2in): Maximum height for complete coverage, often used in commercial settings.

Check: Ensure you have sufficient clear vertical wall space (free from lights, vents, or soffits) to accommodate the cassette height you select.

2. Projection (Extension Length)

The "Projection" refers to how far the screen will pull out from the wall.

  • Flexible Use: You do NOT need to fully extend the screen to its maximum projection for it to work. The internal spring maintains tension at any distance.
  • The Rule: Always order a Projection equal to or greater than the gap you need to fill.
Example: If the gap between your house wall and your fence post is 3700mm, you should select the 4000mm Projection option. You will simply pull the screen out 3.7m and hook it on, leaving the spare fabric safely on the roll.
  • Maximum Limit: Never try to stretch the screen beyond its specified maximum projection.

3. Checking Your Fixing Points

  • Cassette Side: Ensure you have a flat vertical surface (at least 100mm wide) to mount the cassette brackets securely.
  • Docking Side:
    • If using a Wall Bracket: Check the opposing wall is solid.
    • If using a Docking Post: Ensure your ground surface (patio slab or concrete) is solid enough to bolt into.
Can I install the Markilux 790 on an uneven surface or sloping patio?
While the cassette must be mounted vertically on a flat wall, the screen is forgiving of slight ground unevenness. However, the fabric pulls out horizontally, so it will not follow the slope of the ground.
Tip: If your patio slopes away from the house significantly, you might find a gap appears under the fabric at the far end. For commercial terraces with distinctive slopes, we can offer a "sloping top edge" version (shaped cut) on special request to match the gradient or roof pitch.

Is the side screen suitable for use as a windbreak in exposed locations?
Yes, the Markilux 790 is excellent for blocking cooling breezes and creating a sheltered "micro-climate" on your patio or restaurant terrace. The spring-loaded mechanism keeps the fabric taut to prevent excessive flapping.
Important: It is designed for breezes and light winds. In strong gale-force winds or storms, the screen should always be retracted to prevent damage to the mechanism or fixings.

Can I attach the extended screen to something other than a wall?
Absolutely. While a wall bracket is the standard fixing for the handle end, you don't need an opposing wall.
For Homes: You can use a Docking Post bolted to your patio floor, allowing you to create a partition anywhere.
For Businesses: You can use a Ground Sleeve socket, which allows the docking post to be removed completely when not in use—perfect for clearing the terrace for events or cleaning.
