SkyShade 9000 FC Large Scale Cassette Awning

The SkyShade 9000 FC is our premier large-scale folding arm awning, engineered specifically for those who need to cover expansive outdoor areas. Significantly stronger and more robust than standard domestic models, this "heavy-duty" system is the ideal solution for larger homes with wide patios or commercial premises requiring substantial alfresco dining cover.

Based on the renowned 'Armony Plus' platform, the 9000 FC combines architectural strength with elegant design. It features a stylish oval full cassette profile that completely protects the fabric and mechanism when retracted. Available in our online shop in widths up to a massive 9000mm (9 metres) and projections up to 3600mm, it offers unparalleled coverage for grand-scale outdoor living.

Commercial Grade Strength & Installation

Unlike our smaller end-fix models, the SkyShade 9000 FC utilises a multi-bracket fixing system. This allows mounting brackets to be positioned flexibly along the width of the cassette (typically aligning with the arm shoulders), providing superior load distribution essential for an awning of this size.

  • Flexible Fixing: Brackets can be positioned to align with the strongest parts of your wall structure (e.g., brick pillars or studs).
  • Multi-Arm Support: To ensure perfect fabric tension across such wide spans, the system utilises between 2 and 4 heavy-duty folding arms depending on the width ordered.
  • Site Assembly: For ease of transport, awnings up to 7000mm are supplied in one piece. Widths over 7000mm are supplied as a "coupled" system with a seamless profile join for straightforward on-site assembly.

Somfy Motorisation & Smart Control

While manual operation is possible, for an awning of this scale we strongly recommend electric operation.
We fit the industry-leading Somfy IO motor as standard, ensuring smooth, effortless control at the touch of a button. The Somfy IO system is future-proof, allowing you to:

  • Control Your Way: Use a stylish handheld remote or a wireless wall switch.
  • Go Smart: Upgrade to the Somfy TaHoma Switch hub to control your awning via smartphone, tablet, or voice assistants like Amazon Alexa.
  • Safety First: Protect your large awning from sudden gusts by adding a Somfy Wind or Motion Sensor (Eolis 3D). This automatically retracts the cover if dangerous wind speeds are detected, essential peace of mind for large projections.

Integrated LED Lighting Option

Transform your patio into an evening entertainment space with optional integrated LED lighting. Built directly into the underside of the heavy-duty folding arms, these high-quality LED strips provide practical and atmospheric downlighting.

  • Remote Dimming: Fully dimmable via your Somfy remote (requires a multi-channel handset).
  • Complete Kit: The price includes the necessary receiver and transformer box for simple installation.

Premium Dickson Fabrics

The 9000 FC is finished with a high-performance fabric canopy from Dickson, the world leader in outdoor textiles. Choose from our curated selection of popular colours in the online shop, or browse the full Dickson Solar Protection range (PDF available) and specify your exact fabric code.

For specialist applications, we also offer upgraded fabrics such as Dickson Jacquard, Max Self-Cleaning, and Spark FR (Fire Retardant) for a small surcharge (approx. 10-15%).

Custom Finishes

The cassette and hardware are finished in a durable, weather-resistant powder coating.
Standard Colours: White (RAL 9010), Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016), and Black (RAL 9005).
Bespoke Colours: We can powder coat the framework to any RAL colour to match your window frames or branding (POA - typically £70 per linear metre).

Installation Services

Currently, we do not offer nationwide installation. However, for customers within 40 miles of Northamptonshire, we can recommend professional local installers. For all other areas, the product is supplied with detailed instructions for installation by a competent builder or tradesperson.

The SkyShade 9000 FC is a large-scale architectural shading system. While the installation principles are straightforward, the size and weight of this commercial-grade awning mean that careful planning and adequate manpower are essential.

Installation Level: Advanced DIY / Professional Builder
Recommended Team: 2-4 People (Depending on width) or Lifting Equipment

1. Handling & Weight

  • Heavy Duty: Unlike our lighter models, a 9000 FC can weigh significantly more (approx. 15-20kg per metre width).
  • Lifting: For awnings over 5m wide, we strongly recommend using mechanical lifting equipment (such as a Genie Lift) or a team of at least 3-4 people to safely lift the cassette onto the wall brackets.
  • Coupled Units: Sizes over 7m wide are supplied as two sections which are joined on-site. This makes handling easier but requires precise alignment during installation.

2. Wall Brackets & Fixings

The most critical part of the installation is the secure fixing of the wall brackets.

  • Multi-Bracket System: This awning uses multiple brackets spaced along the width (not just at the ends). These brackets should be positioned to align with the strongest parts of your wall (e.g., brick pillars or studs) while avoiding the folding arm positions.
  • Fixing Selection: Due to the enormous variation in UK wall construction, we do not supply wall bolts. You must select high-strength fixings appropriate for your specific substrate.
  • Chemical Fixings: We universally recommend using chemical resin anchors (M10 or M12 studs) for all installations. This provides a stress-free, waterproof bond capable of withstanding the significant dynamic pull-out forces generated by a large projection awning.

3. Pitch & Rainwater

Once the awning is hung, setting the correct angle (pitch) is vital for performance.

  • Rain Run-off: To use the awning in light rain, you must achieve a minimum pitch of 15-20 degrees. This ensures water runs off quickly and does not pool on the fabric.
  • Shallow Pitch Warning: If your installation height restricts you to a shallow pitch (less than 15°), the awning becomes a "fair weather only" product. It must be retracted immediately in rain to prevent the fabric stretching or the arms failing under water weight.

4. Resources

Comprehensive installation manuals and technical data sheets (including bracket loads and pull-out forces) are available in the "Downloads" section. If you are unsure about the structural suitability of your wall, please consult a structural engineer or professional builder before proceeding.

The SkyShade 9000 FC is a premium, commercial-grade awning system backed by a comprehensive warranty. Important Exclusions

The following are not covered under this guarantee:

  • Weather Damage: While the 9000 FC is a robust system, damage caused by storms, heavy snow, or water pooling is excluded. The awning should be retracted in adverse weather conditions.
  • Installation Faults: Issues arising from inadequate wall fixings, poor structural support, or incorrect bracket positioning are the responsibility of the installer.
  • Automation Failure: We cannot accept liability for damage caused if automatic sensors (sun/wind) fail to retract the awning during a storm. These sensors are aids to operation, not safety-critical devices.
  • Consumables: Remote control batteries, fuses, or light bulbs.
  • Modifications: Any unauthorised alterations to the frame, mechanism, or electrical system will void the warranty.

Fabric Characteristics

Acrylic fabrics are technical textiles, and certain visual irregularities are inherent to the manufacturing process. These are not defects and do not impact performance:

  • Veining: Visible lines or "cobweb" marks that may appear against the light.
  • Waffling: Slight rippling near seams or hems caused by fabric thickness variations on the roller.
  • Fold Marks: Creases that may be visible along the centre of the cloth.

These characteristics are industry standards as defined by Dickson Constant and are not valid grounds for fabric replacement.

How to Measure for Your SkyShade 9000 FC

The SkyShade 9000 FC is a commercial-grade system capable of covering vast areas. While the basic principles of measuring width and projection remain simple, the scale of this awning (especially for coupled units over 7m wide) requires careful consideration of your building's structure and access.

1. Measuring the Width (Ordering Size)

The "Width" is the total end-to-end measurement of the aluminium cassette.

  • Single Units (Up to 7m): Measure the total wall area you want to shade. Ensure you have clear, solid masonry along the entire length to accommodate the multi-bracket fixing system.
  • Coupled Units (Over 7m): For widths between 7m and 12m, the awning is supplied as two sections that join on-site.
Crucial Check: You must ensure the wall is perfectly flat. If the wall bows or is uneven, the two cassettes will not align correctly at the join, preventing the seamless profile connection.
  • Bracket Zones: Unlike end-fix awnings, this model uses brackets spaced along its width (see Installation Manual). Check that you don't have downpipes or obstructions running vertically through the zone where the cassette will sit.

2. Measuring the Projection

The "Projection" is the distance the awning extends from the wall.

  • Available Sizes: Up to 3600mm (3.6m).
  • The "2.5m Rule": Due to the heavy-duty arms and large projection, safety regulations recommend a minimum installation height of 2500mm (2.5m) from the ground. This ensures adequate clearance when the awning is pitched downwards for rain run-off.
  • Safety Zone: Ensure there are no fixed obstacles (walls, fences, tall plants) within 500mm of where the front profile will stop when fully open.

3. Structural Assessment (Vital for Large Awnings)

A 9m wide awning with a 3.6m projection acts like a giant sail. The pull-out forces on the wall brackets are significant.

  • Wall Condition: Do not install a SkyShade 9000 FC on single-skin brickwork, weak mortar, or hollow blocks without professional advice. You may need chemical resin fixings or internal spreader plates.
  • Access: If ordering a large coupled unit, consider how you will get the 7m+ sections to the installation area. Do you have side access? Will it fit through a garden gate?

4. Obstacles & Spacing

  • Above the Awning: Allow 20-30mm clearance above the cassette for lifting it onto the brackets during installation.
  • Doors & Vents: Check that the awning, when pitched at 15-20° for rain protection, won't foul the top of opening doors.

Technical Assistance: For any awning over 6m wide, we strongly recommend speaking to our technical team before ordering. Send us a photo of your wall, and we can advise on bracket positioning and structural suitability.
